Max Conrad and three students from the “Winona Experiment” group just prior to take off on a trip east in August 1954. From left is Gary Anderson, Max Conrad, Ann Wing, and Marilyn (Anderson) Doebbert. The four flew to Chicago, New Jersey, New York, Washington DC, and lastly, Lockhaven, Pa., to visit the Piper Factory. The students assisted Max with flying on the trip. The Winona Experiment was created to teach young people basic flying skills and about aircraft design and construction. The aircraft is a Piper Tri-Pacer.

Automobile built in Winona 1900-02 by Ira E. Berry and F. Harry Berry at the plant of the New Winona Manufacturing Company. It was propelled by a two cylinder twon horizontal gasoline engine. A speed of 30 miles and hour was obtained on level roads.

At the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in 1898, the whole of Company E, Minnesota National Guard was composed of Winona County men. Among them, Jacob Michalowski was a first lieutenant and Leonard J. Bruski, a second lieutenant. The company was mustered into service in May of that year and mustered out the following Other members of the unit were Sgt. Joseph Czaplewski, Cpls. Ma. Buczynski and Vincent Kropidlowski, Pfc. Teofil Milkowski, Pvts. Mike Stefanski, Frank Reszka, Michael Kulas, Frank Maliszewski, John Wieczorek, Joseph Gromowski, John Boland, Paul Grulkowski, Harry Rackow, Leo Reszka, Mike Szablewski, Anton Gallas, Frank Szarmach, John Bernac, Anton Zabrocki, Joseph Grajczyk, Reinhold Eichendorf and August Czapiewski.

Trumpeter Wilhelm Braatz came to the U.S. with his parents at age 14. He served in the 24th OH Vol Infantry for one year in the Civil War. He re-enlisted but the government released him. He returned to Minnesota and served 13 months in the 1st MN Mounted Rangers, E Mounted Rangers - 1862, M Cavalry - 1863.

Stephen O'Dea. (Brother of John, Sugar Loaf owner). Left County Clare in 1850 at 17. He drove a wagon for a employer from New York to Galena, Ill. They took a steamboat to Winona and settled here. He worked and sent for six siblings and his mother to come to America. All came to Winona except two siblings who settled in New York. Stephen became a prosperous farmer near Lewiston and even sports a diamond in his tie tac.

Peter O’Dea, with former Winona fire horses he bought for a farm near Lewiston. Every time the noon whistle would blow in Lewiston, the horses would take off across the field, thinking they were going to a fire. So he soon learned to have them in the barn at noon.

Family of George T. Church, Stockton Valley (approx. 1900). His father, Octavius Church, moved his family from West Virginia to Stockton Valley in 1860 to avoid his son’s being drafted into the Confederate army. George T. ran the family farm after his father died and later his son Raymond, and grandson Russell took over. The Church dairy farm they established in Stockton Valley is currently owned by Dawn (Church) Webster and her husband Ian Webster. Alice Ford Einhorn, 1914. Sarah Alice Ford was born March 22, 1893 at Witoka and attended the Boynton School. She attended Winona Normal School and taught at the Boynton and Ridgway Schools. She married Charles Clifford Einhorn of Wiscoy in 1916. He was the son of Henry Einhorn and Amy Harvey, both of Wiscoy Township. They lived in the Wilson area and later Minneapolis. They returned to Winona in the 1940’s and lived on Dacota Street. Clifford died in 1963; Alice died in 1992. Their children were Kathryn (Anderson), Kenneth, and Robert. Alice’s father James Ford was born in Herkimer County, NY and migrated to Wiscoy Township in the 1850’s. He married Clara Landgraff, also of Wiscoy Township. James and Clara Ford had eight children who were born between 1879 and 1895. The children were Nellie C. (Van Alstine), Dora E., Gaylord, Chauncey, Clarence, Ellen Jeanette (Bridge), Sarah Alice (Einhorn) , and Donald. Clarence Ford lived in Winona. Th! e Ford ancestry in American begins with William Foord who was born in 1604 in England. He arrived on the “Fortune” which landed at New Plymouth in 1621. The name was later changed to Ford. Samuel Van Sant, inventor, entrepreneur, legislator and governor, in the uniform of the Grand Army of the Republic. Van Sant was elected commander-in-chief of the organization of Union veterans of the Civil War in 1910.
