UW-Madison Extension will host a beef cow-calf workshop Tuesday, July 28, at 6 p.m. at Starck Century Farm near Cadott.
This program is designed for cow-calf producers seeking to improve pasture and herd management practices while increasing profitability. Topics will include managing pastures for long-term production, breeding decisions for cow longevity, and marketing the fall calf crop. The Starck family will also discuss their transition to rotational grazing and efforts to improve herd genetics.
The workshop will cover best management practices in the following areas:
Pasture management: Dr. Mark Renz, Extension weed specialist
Discussion will include weed control options and rotational grazing practices that maximize productivity and environmental stewardship while minimizing costs.

Breeding Decisions for Cow Longevity: Bill Halfman and Ryan Sterry, Extension beef specialist and regional livestock educator
Topics will include establishing herd goals and using genetic tools and production records to make informed breeding decisions that balance performance, functionality, and longevity.
Marketing the Fall Calf Crop: Bill Halfman, Extension beef specialist
This session will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of backgrounding calves and adding additional weight before marketing feeder cattle.
The workshop will take place at Starck Century Farm, 7501 280th St., Cadott (east of Cadott on County Highway X, then north on 280th St.).
Participants should come prepared, as this is a rain-or-shine event that will involve walking. Please bring rain gear, a lawn chair for seating, and clean, washable footwear.
