Tunnel vision (2008/08/07)
Steve Profilet’s “Kudos” comments of July 30, “on his move to the right on the subject of ethanol,” exemplifies the meaning of “conservative myopia.”

Both shameful and praiseworthy legacies (2008/08/07)
A recent guest opinion on July 31 suggested Minnesotans have been left a legacy of shame by our elected officials who, intent on “no new taxes,” have allowed the state’s infrastructure of

Actions are stronger than words (2008/08/07)
The people of the First District in Minnesota sent Tim Walz to fight for us in Congress two years ago, and he is doing that.

The Bard still relevant (2008/08/06)
I am not a Shakespeare expert and I don’t study the Shakespeare plays before attending them. After attending The GRSF production of the “Merchant of Venice” this summer, I too, have a few observations and I offer them up as a contrast to those presented by John Campbell in the Winona Daily News last Sunday.

Do the right thing (2008/08/06)
Summer is finally here. It looks like the weather has finally shown us the sun is here to stay. So, now that you are in more of a summer routine and the weather is better, I have a favor to ask of all of you.

Galewski’s rant misdirected (2008/08/06)
Jim Galewski criticizes Rep. Tim Walz for having credit card debt and a substantial mortgage.

Think, learn and question before you vote (2008/08/05)
In defense of state Rep. Ken Tschumper, I know as a former farm girl that cows get out on an average of once or twice a year. My dad’s did, too. No farmer wants his cows going astray. That’s lost income if he loses them, and even more if he has to reimburse someone for damage.

Let voting take care of the problem (2008/08/05)
The mindless partisan bickering displayed by Mike Hadaway and Lynette Lachinski, in their response to Jim Galewski, is the same behavior practiced by our legislators in Washington.

Find the incentives (2008/08/05)
Let me introduce the Winona County Board to wind power in Lewiston. There a couple wind turbines in operation near there and have been for some years now.

Thanks for the sesquicentennial event (2008/08/04)
I wish to thank Bob Bambenek, the Winona County recorder and his staff for the Sesquicentennial Recognition program at the Winona County Fair this year.

Always a Winhawk (2008/08/04)
The Winona High School Class of 1973 reunion committee would like to thank all of the classmates who attended our 35th Hawaiian luau weekend. We had classmates travel from Alaska, Texas, Washington, Washington, D.C., Colorado and many other states to reunite with old friends.

Wesley Clark was right (2008/08/02)
With all the attention these days given to drought, floods and wildfires, this is a good time to remind people that Congress commissioned a report on the effects that global warming was having in the country right now.

It’s called class warfare (2008/08/02)
I had to respond to the irresponsible journalism of Jim Galewski. Once again, he reminds me of my cousin, who sounds like Fox News. Let’s blame everyone but who deserves it.

A country for oil executives (2008/08/02)
I have to respond to Jim Galewski’s column on Aug. 1.

Missing Jan. 20 (2008/08/01)
One day last week, I slept in for a few hours, and when I awoke, I turned on my TV, and from what I saw, I could have sworn I slept through next Jan. 20.

What mission is being accomplished? (2008/08/01)
John McCain’s new campaign slogan: Mission Accomplished —part deux!

Collecting years worth of stuff (2008/08/01)
Several weeks ago, a letter to the editor appeared in the paper, concerning one’s ability to collect stuff by Katie Buck; things some might consider useless. An example she cited were rubber bands. As I read her letter further; I could really relate.

The true history of the Wilkie (2008/07/30)
In the wake of the razing of the Julius C. Wilkie, this letter addresses the desire of some to replace this “icon” of Winona because the “boat that don’t float” represented our city’s river heritage.

Start eliminating nuisance cats (2008/07/30)
It is a nice summer evening with the sun setting, and then begins the arrival of feral cats into the neighborhood. I don’t know where they come from but do know where they are going.

Praise to Hively-Johnson article (2008/07/30)
Kudos to Robert Hively-Johnson on his move to the right on the subject of ethanol in Sunday’s Daily News. Now, will he continue and refute the Al-Goreian myth of global warming (or is it “climate change”)?

Comments from Ibisch are divisive (2008/07/29)
This letter is in response to Pastor Ibisch’s letter which recently appeared in area newspapers. I am very disappointed in his remarks concerning Rep. Tschumper, Sen. Sharon Erickson Ropes and the DFL party.

Dog wash cleaned up (2008/07/28)
What a fabulous day it was. Even the weather cooperated. Thank you to everyone who helped support the Winona Area Humane Society by attending Dog Wash 2008. We are honored to have partnered once again with Pet Medical Center. Its staff washed an amazing 82 dogs and still managed to keep smiles on their faces. Being hosted by Pet Medical Center is what made this event a success.

Thanks for your work (2008/07/28)
To Bob Bambenek and the dedicated workers at the county recorder’s office: Thank you for your many hours of work to make the county fair presentation of the 150-year honor such a success. It was greatly appreciated and set a milestone for the rest of the state.

Good job, Bob (2008/07/28)
I wish to publicly thank Bob Bambenek, our Winona County recorder, and his staff for the remarkable job they did with the Sesquicentennial Recognition program at the Winona County Fair this year.

Davis willing to keep energy options open (2008/07/27)
As I listen to the energy and fuel debate in the congressional race, one candidate is willing to keep options on the table, Brian Davis. He knows we will gradually transition to new sources of fuel, and he’s willing to make the transition more affordable for regular Joes just like me.

Ethanol is plainly a no-win scam (2008/07/27)
By all accounts, ethanol production increases global warming, causes massive destruction of carbon-storing forestland and, worse, wastes huge amounts of already limited potable ground water. Reduced corn supply significantly raises food prices and related products.

Property rights are not supreme (2008/07/27)
In response to Don Evanson’s argument, “The First Amendment is subordinate to all the others, after all, since if one’s right to own property doesn’t exist, there is no point in freedom of speech.”

Why can’t he just get along? (2008/07/24)
The fact that Rep. Ken Tschumper has gotten repeated citations from the Houston County Sheriff’s Department for being a nuisance because he and his help don’t control his cows is not as serious as his reaction. Whether Tschumper pays the fine this time like he did before or chooses to tie up the sheriff’s department and the court demanding they make a case against him (after a dozen episodes) isn’t the real issue.

Not surprised by Pawlenty’s nepotism (2008/07/24)
Recently, Gov. Tim Pawlenty appointed state Sen. Betsy Wergin to the Public Utilities Commission to fulfill the term being vacated by her brother, LeRoy Koppendrayer. The governor has once again shown his true colors by “keeping it in the family” rather than seeking a professional to fulfill a statewide office. He appointed a political ally who has never served on a legislative committee concerning energy or utilities, has never authored a significant legislative initiative in these areas and has no past-career experience in the field.

Respect property owners’ rights, too (2008/07/24)
This is to the Winona County Board: Please think twice before the approval of some of the proposed ordinances. Why are you making ordinances for private land owners, like myself and others who own the bluffs? As it states in the pamhlet by BLEW, bluffs create the beauty that draws people to the Winona area. More buildings and roads visible from the valleys will only degrade our community.

It’s the cows, not the politics (2008/07/23)
I read Ken Tschumper’s “opinion,” and I’d like to see a few points addressed other than the “political tap dance.”

Luddites on parade (2008/07/23)
Luddite: one opposed to change, especially technological change.

Time to walk the walk (2008/07/23)
Gas costs, weight problems, could they be due to not walking?

EFCA does not take away secret ballots (2008/07/22)
Have you seen the ad on TV that says Al Franken supports the legislation that would take away the secret ballot from workers who want to join a union? Every time I’ve seen it I could not believe that Al would support something that would hurt workers. So, I investigated:

Thanks, Draz! (2008/07/22)
I feel compelled to recognize and express my gratitude to Rep. Steve Drazkowski. In his first year as a legislator, he has repeatedly shown great leadership ability. Drazkowski has been exceptional in communicating with local government and understanding their needs as well as how various levels of government can work together to accomplish the best outcome.

Repeating the past eight years (2008/07/22)
I am writing in response to Gene Russell’s recent slam on Darrell Ehrlick’s editorial concerning new petroleum drilling in environmentally sensitive areas and the big push by the current administration to once again try and hoodwink the American public.

Save the view for everyone (2008/07/22)
We hope that all officials who have the power to make decisions for all of us will work to keep buildings away from our blufftops. Every time we see a home appear on that skyline it saddens us that a structure, which will let a few people in one family have a spectacular view of the river, will spoil an equally spectacular view of the bluffs for the hundreds or thousands of us who enjoy it on a regular basis.

Bike club support is appreciated (2008/07/21)
The Down ’n’ Dirty Bike Club would like to thank everyone who helped make our silent art auction a success. Several local artists donated their work for the event, and we had quite a bit of traffic into the shop to bid on the pieces. Fundraising events like this one help keep our free bike programs going. Thanks for your support!

Thanks for the great festival (2008/07/21)
On behalf of the Minnesota Beethoven Festival committee, I would like to thank the Winona citizens and surrounding community for their wonderful support of the Minnesota Orchestra at the July 1 pops concert. Kicking off the three-week long festival, this event packed nearly 4,800 attendees, far surpassing last year’s total of 3,000. The orchestra’s stellar performance did not disappoint, delighting the audience with its unique blend of precision and dynamics.

Just horsin’ around at Big Valley Ranch (2008/07/21)
We at Big Valley Ranch thank the well-organized Winona Area Park Recreation staff, parents, friends, volunteers, riders and workers who prepared and participated in this season’s horsemanship classes and family ranch days. Many of you attend every year. With all your efforts, we were able to provide a healthy, fresh-air, outdoor exercise and an educational sport.

Thanks for the honor (2008/07/21)
A county fair afternoon program we thought was to be filled with recognition to many deserving individuals, businesses and farm families turned into complete surprise to us as we were named the king and queen of the fair. It truly was an honor, and we enjoyed this past week spent with so many friends and family. From the horse-and-buggy-with-the-fringe-on-top ride around the fairgrounds to the “Gator” ride getting us to church on time, tasting all the goodies at the contests, the outstanding music in the entertainment tent, the 4-H clubs busily serving food to all the hungry fairgoers, and it is an awesome parade when the youth presented their exhibits in the Parade of Champions. We honor them for all their hard work and make our county proud of their efforts.

Protecting all rights (2008/07/20)
Darrell Ehrlick, editor of the Winona Daily News, writing on behalf of the Daily News’ editorial board in its July 15 edition, opens the editorial by making the point that the county’s bluffs are “our” bluffs as if they do not belong to the citizens that own them.

Other half of gas prices (2008/07/20)
My heating bill arrived today with an increase in my monthly even-pay amount for natural gas.

Words to remember (2008/07/20)
Here are some quotes to remember: “Banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies.”

Ehrlick’s confused, left-wing agenda (2008/07/19)
Winona Daily News Editor Darrell Ehrlick’s July 13 article under “Our Opinion” contained no surprises, but did generate a great deal of confusion.

More of the same with John McCain (2008/07/19)
If you don’t think you will get more of the same with John McCain, think again. He has already adopted the Bush slander machine. For instance, he has repeatedly said that Barack Obama will raise taxes on all Americans. This is not true. He will roll back tax breaks for the rich, but the middle class will get tax relief.

Questions for Gene (2008/07/19)
Gene Russell’s last missive in the Winona Daily News letters column was long on name calling and short on facts. Nevertheless, I will attempt to answer one question and ask a few of my own.

More of the same (2008/07/18)
I don’t think its appropriate to put Congressman Tim Walz in with the mess in Washington, since President Bush has been running the show for almost eight years.

Honoring 154 150-year-olds (2008/07/18)
Congratulations to the 154 Sesquicentennial recognition recipients honored at the Winona County Fair. Included in this group are churches, families, schools, farms, local governments and numerous organizations.

Terrorists of the mind (2008/07/18)
The Philippine Catholic archbishop has followed American counterparts by ordering denial of his church’s sacraments to believers who favor “choice,” particularly politicians. Here, recently, one politician was publicly rebuked at his parish communion rail. Similar salvos are being fired upon men and women supporting same-sex legislation.

Bamboozled by the paper (2008/07/17)
Well, you did it. I read it in the Winona Daily News and in the La Crosse Tribune, so it must be true.

We did the right thing (2008/07/17)
It was one of those cool, breezy days we all wish for after a hot muggy spell.

Protect the bluffs (2008/07/17)
Will we do it? Will we protect the bluffs from more development?

Change adverse possession law (2008/07/16)
Adverse possession is a law, recognized in every state.

A piece of river history will be lost (2008/07/16)
As a longtime river historian and curator of a steamboat museum, I mourn the loss of the Julius C. Wilkie. Although it was not really a boat, it represented river history, and now, we have lost yet another venue to promote that history.

Where are the alternative fuels? (2008/07/16)
No drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge? Spoken like a true liberal, Darrell Ehrlick.

Thanks for the kindness (2008/07/15)
I want to thank the thoughtful person(s) who returned the two purple recycling containers that blew away during Thursday’s storm to my yard. Thank you for caring.

Davis has no local support (2008/07/15)
In a recent letter to the editor, Paul Ibisch talked about the fundraising capabilities of Congressional candidates Tim Walz and Brian Davis.

Act now to protect the bluffs (2008/07/15)
At 7 p.m. Thursday at the Winona County Government Center, the County Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing on a newly proposed county zoning ordinance. Your voice is needed to protect the bluffs across all of Winona County.

Donation helped team continue winning ways (2008/07/14)
On behalf of the Galaxy Youth Gymnastics Program, the Winona/Winona Cotter High School gymnastics team and the Winona State University gymnastics team, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the Morrie Miller Foundation for their generous donation to these three programs. Their gift allowed us to make major purchases in equipment that is used by all three teams.

Wonderful Wednesday evening (2008/07/13)
As we were leaving the Chapel of Mary of the Angels on Wednesday evening, I remarked to my wife that we had just experienced a prelude to heaven. Actually, I fear that the angelic choirs might be a bit of a letdown.

Check out Pfeilsticker (2008/07/13)
On May 13, it was a great delight to witness Linda Pfeilsticker get the unanimous endorsement for the House District 28B seat. This election provides residents of District 28B an opportunity to elect an enthusiastic, well informed and articulate woman to represent us. Her leadership experiences in education, her agricultural upbringing, and her service to others make her highly qualified to represent our views in St. Paul.

MPR isn’t worth it (2008/07/13)
While recycling electronics at the Onalaska Best Buy on July 7, I had to cut the visit short, as the past Monday area thunderstorm began gathering in earnest.

Philistinefest — coming soon (2008/07/12)
Congratulations to the city of Winona for razing the Wilkie.

Foie gras reporting one-sided (2008/07/12)
I was disappointed to read your one-sided reporting on foie gras producer Christian Gasset (“Caledonia man one of only four U.S. foie gras producers”).

Enjoy history, good music (2008/07/12)
This is an unabashed non-political promotion of a free performance.

Meat is murder (2008/07/11)
Regarding the recent “Caledonia man one of only four U.S. foie gras producers” article, the idea of animals as commodities is further proof of the fact that, constant arguments to the contrary, humans are not as evolved as we’d like to think we are.

New columns a good addition (2008/07/11)
Kudos to the Winona Daily News for adding Click and Clack (The Tappet Brothers) and “Under the Hood” by Brad Bergholdt to the newspaper.

Avoid genetically engineered foods (2008/07/11)
Monsanto’s genetically engineered sugar beets are hitting the marketplace this year, and major food companies like Kellogg’s have chosen to not guarantee that their products are free of any GE ingredients. Consumer groups, led by the Organic Consumers Association, have launched a boycott of Kellogg’s

Remembering the story of Balaam (2008/07/10)
When it comes to this year’s presidential elections, perhaps it might do well to recall the Old Testament story of Balaam’s donkey (Numbers 22 through 24), which ended in the donkey turning on Balaam, himself sent in by the Moabites to vex the Israelites.

Get back to work, Tschumper (2008/07/10)
I’ve been following that Ken Tschumper cattle story with much amusement. Ken can’t understand the charges and needs an explanation.

Spot the short-sighted planning (2008/07/10)
It has been estimated that OPEC has 922 billion barrels of oil and that the rest of the world has around 273 billion barrels.

Davis is right for Minnesota (2008/07/09)
Brian Davis is the best and brightest of candidates running for Congress this year. He is a husband, a father of four, holds a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering, a doctorate in mechanical engineering and is a medical doctor at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. That is the short list of his credits.

The pledge should stay (2008/07/09)
I disagree with a recent column by Paul M. Howey regarding the Pledge of Allegiance.

Humane Society buddy plan (2008/07/09)
The month of July is “Buddy Plan” month for adopting adult cats at the Winona Area Humane Society (two for the price of one, which includes vet check, vaccinations, spaying/neutering).

Vote ‘Yes’ on Nov. 4 (2008/07/08)
It seems that everywhere you look this weekend, you can see kids swimming and fishing, canoes and kayaks ready for action, and people enjoying the water.

Our dire situation (2008/07/08)
I totally agree with Sen. John McCain’s energy plan to promote offshore oil drilling in the U.S.

Restore by the people (2008/07/08)
July 4, 1776: Fifty-six British colonial subjects signed the Declaration of Independence. These first Americans opened a portal to a unique freedom based upon a (born) person’s “inalienable rights.”

‘Wizard of Oz’ a wonderful time (2008/07/07)
On behalf of Home and Community Option’s clients, its board of directors, other volunteers and employees, I want to thank the Winona area community for helping our 11th annual summer musical play, “Wizard of Oz,” successfully achieve all of our goals.

Cotter Classic was a success (2008/07/07)
Thank you to all participants, sponsors and volunteers who helped make the 21st Annual Cotter Classic a success. It was a beautiful day for golf at Cedar Valley. Pork Masters again provided a delicious meal for the golfers and the spirit of Cotter truly resonated throughout the day. Through the generosity and support of all participants and sponsors, Cotter raised $24,600.

Shakespeare event was wonderful (2008/07/07)
The fifth annual Chocolate, Shakespeare and Champagne event for the Winona County Historical Society was a great success! Almost 300 attendees enjoyed champagne, punch and a wide variety of desserts.

GRSF ‘tech week’ was great (2008/07/07)
On behalf of the Great River Shakespeare Company, I would like to thank the following businesses for their contributions of food during “tech week.”

Invitation to the Goodview Gallop (2008/07/06)
We would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to the 29th annual Goodview Gallop. Walk for health — or run — with your family, friends and co-workers.

Article about gun use was misleading (2008/07/06)
I know that the Daily News is not responsible for the content of a story from a wire service, but since I don’t know how to protest to the Associated Press, I am venting my frustration on these pages.

Parade space should be shared (2008/07/06)
It was frustrating trying to find a place to sit for the parade. The boulevards are city property, yet almost all were roped off by Friday night and Saturday morning. I don’t think this should be allowed.

What’s Hively going to talk about? (2008/07/05)
Just think Robert Hively-Johnson, six more months of your “favorite” President George W. Bush. Who and what are you going to cry about then? Obama?

Proud to be a Winonan (2008/07/05)
What a privilege it was to be selected as the Steamboat Days’ Sports Grand Marshal.

Don’t let this nightmare come true (2008/07/05)
One night, back in my teenage years, I had a dream that was so vivid and disturbing that I told it to many people and remember it to this day.

A few questions about rental restrictions (2008/07/03)
Just a short note about the 30 percent limitation on rentals in various blocks in Winona.

Only in Winona: Pulled over for loud mufflers (2008/07/03)
Only in Winona will you get stopped for loud mufflers. I bet they forgot about the bumper height law.

U.S. soldiers deserve our respect, gratitude (2008/07/03)
As Independence Day draws near, it is important for us to pause and reflect on the heroic actions of our members of the Armed Forces past and present. The brave Americans who crossed the Delaware in 1776, fought at Gettysburg, marched through the Argonne, landed at Normandy, defended Pusan, battled during the Tet Offensive, liberated Kuwait, braved the streets of Baghdad, and defended our country and democracy nobly.

Highway cleanup costs taxpayers (2008/07/03)
I really don’t understand why people are always yelling about our taxes going up.

Thanks for supporting concert (2008/07/02)
Many, many thanks from Theatre du Mississippi to the Winona community for a wonderfully successful free concert with James Armstrong Blues Band on Saturday night.

Creating a better business climate (2008/07/02)
The Winona Area Chamber of Commerce has been working for several years alongside the Grand Rapids Area Chamber, and other partners, to pass a meaningful truck weight bill for agriculture and forestry industries. This year, we finally saw success, a big help for both timber and agriculture business operations.

We will miss James Gostomski (2008/07/02)
What great news and congratulations to James Gostomski on procuring a $450,000 grant for Winona Area Catholic Schools and Cotter. What an unbelievable gift for our children and our schools. The kids at WACS and Cotter will absolutely benefit from wellness centers, fitness equipment, mountain bikes, Rollerblades, canoes and much, much more. It will be exciting to watch this grant come to fruition.

Galewski didn’t even come close (2008/07/01)
Jim Galewski’s column on June 28 concerning the city’s overpaying for the former Charter building on Fourth and Johnson streets does not come anywhere near reflecting what actually occurred with this property.

Freedom’s sentry (2008/07/01)
The Bill of Rights, the Constitution’s shining crown, was adopted over conservative anguish. The Bush administration tarnished that crown, but the Supreme Court ruled for individual citizen security. Freedom’s crown shines.

Thanks for the poppy success (2008/06/30)
I just want to send out a big thank you to all of the people and businesses, who gave donations of money to our recent poppy drive. The poppies you received for your donation are made by veterans. The legion then buys the poppy, and volunteer workers go to area businesses or get permission from local stores to try and get donations of money, in exchange for a poppy.

Thanks for the donations (2008/06/30)
On Friday, June 13, a wonderful event was held as a flood recovery project, and we want to thank the organizers of the event: Winona River City 4-H Club, Master Gardeners of Winona County and the Garvin Brook Disaster Relief Fund.

Race was not given enough coverage (2008/06/29)
This past weekend, the eighth annual BK5K Road Race was held around East Lake Winona.

Tell city leaders you want a park (2008/06/29)
On July 7, the Winona City Council will make a crucial decision about whether to buy five lots on the bluffs overlooking the city that are owned by Jerry Papenfuss.

County leaders should help protect the blufflands (2008/06/29)
Years ago my parents would pack up the family and drive us all to Winona to “see the beautiful trees and mountains!” Later, I moved here to work and raise a family.

Please share the road: Look out for motorcyclists (2008/06/29)
With the arrival of summer and warmer weather, more motorcycles are back out on the road — and the drivers of both passenger vehicles and motorcycles need to be more alert.

Congress selling off our rights (2008/06/28)
This past week, the Democratic-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed what is billed as a compromise on the FISA law, a law which governs domestic spying in our country.

A gardening angel of East End Rec (2008/06/28)
Somewhere around April, I started having visions of a garden at the East End Recreation Center.

Help keep Winona streets clean (2008/06/28)
A note to lawn mowers (some of you): The city crews try their best to keep our streets looking neat and clean. Thanks to city crews.

Great police department (2008/06/27)
On June 24, as I was driving my 1985 Chevy collector’s truck down west Broadway, I was stopped by a police officer for loud mufflers.

Unanswered questions (2008/06/27)
Recently in this forum, several writers, including myself, have posed questions on various subjects. These questions remain unanswered.

Thanks to a wonderful place (2008/06/27)
I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who has ever given me words of encouragement, or a cheer from your car.

The GOP sham (2008/06/26)
Officials of the Minnesota Republican Party refer to conventions as being part of the political “process.” “Sham” would be a more descriptive term.

Thinking outside of the box (2008/06/26)
Our bridge problem got me thinking: The present route of Minnesota Highway 43 with four 90-degree turns through town is a terrible route.

Confusion about polygamy (2008/06/26)
The raid at a FLDS polygamist compound in Texas has drawn national attention in recent weeks. In fact, there are several similar Mormon fundamentalist sects scattered throughout the western U.S. The reason for these polygamist groups today is due to followers of the Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith, taking his revelation seriously — live in polygamy or be damned.

What if you had a million dollars? (2008/06/25)
Did you ever say, “If I had a million dollars, I would …”

Get the plans from MnDOT (2008/06/25)
The Winona City Council has decided to raze the Wilkie but keep its base.

Only in Winona (2008/06/25)
About 20 years ago, one of Winona’s prominent officials, I’ll call him “Jack” in order to protect his real name, first introduced me to the saying, “A boat that won’t float; an airplane that won’t fly and a nun who’s out of order.”

Steamboat Days were great (2008/06/24)
Winona I would like to send a congratulations to the Winona Steamboat Days Association for a job well done last week. In my humble opinion, the festivities seem to have improved year after year for some time now. This year was great.

Winona ORC needs your help (2008/06/24)
and other members of the board of directors We at the Winona Occupational Rehabilitation Center are now in the midst of our annual fund raising campaign and need your support.

The difference between prayer (2008/06/24)
and protest By John Heid Winona Why is it that when one prays for peace in a church, synagogue or mosque, people call the gathering a service and it is deemed holy, yet when one prays for peace at a veterans’ memorial it is labeled a protest and decried? The site of prayer is clearly significant, but let us not confuse prayer and protest.

Restore live! (2008/06/24)
Fountain City, Wis. I want the “live!” section back to the way it used to be.

Thanks for the ride (2008/06/23)
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone involved in our safe and timely commute to and from work during the week of June 9-13 when the Highway 43 Interstate Bridge was closed. It was a great adventure and an awesome experience.

Winona didn’t give other businesses a chance (2008/06/22)
I, as a taxpayer and business owner, want other taxpayers to know our city is spending more money than it has to by appointing one company to assist people across the bridge without contacting any other companies to help.

Republican Party a caricature of itself (2008/06/22)
The recent mailing that Brian Davis sent appealing for contributions from my very gullible 90-plus-year-old grandmother is a perfect indictment of yourself, the current Republican Party and the deceptive propaganda wars that elections in the United States have become.

Implement a dress code (2008/06/22)
I have the best dress code idea for middle school and senior high students. I say middle school, too, because some of these girls are very well-developed.

Save our bluffs (2008/06/22)
We live in a beautiful part of the country, and its crown jewels are our beautiful, unspoiled bluffs.

My last hurrah (2008/06/21)
My last public garden tour will be today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (no charge) at 55 East Lake Boulevard.

Walz shows common sense on energy (2008/06/21)
It’s great to see our congressman, Tim Walz, is a leader who understands our energy crisis and is working for positive, realistic solutions to solve it.

Thank you to Winona area residents (2008/06/21)
Thank you everyone — residents, commuters, travelers, business owners, city and county officials — all who were impacted by the closure of the Highway 43 bridge on June 3. The patience, understanding and cooperation shown during this difficult time are a credit to the community. I know that this closure resulted in considerable hardship to all who use the bridge regularly. This difficult decision was made with only one concern in mind — the safety of all citizens of Minnesota.

Protestors off the mark (2008/06/20)
As a member of VFW Post 1287 Color Guard, I was honored to be a part of the dedication ceremony of the Saint Mary’s University Veterans Memorial. The monument is a beautiful, fitting memorial to those who sacrificed their lives in the service of our country. The ceremony was tastefully and, at times, emotionally done, as it should have been.

Help find 150-year-olds (2008/06/20)
With this being the year of the sesquicentennial, the Winona County Recorder’s Office is looking to recognize families, farms, businesses and public entities with 150 years of existence in Winona County. We have received a lot of interest from people regarding this and are looking to get the information out to as many people as possible. We would like to find as many families, farms and organizations that have 150 years as possible so we can recognize them at the Winona County Fair on July 10. Please send information to Bob Bambenek, Winona County Recorder, 177 Main St., Winona, MN 55987, or call (507) 457-6340.

Give the gift of life (2008/06/20)
Olivia Pelley was very lucky to get a kidney transplant. Over half of the 99,000 Americans on the national waiting list will die before they get a transplant. Most of these deaths are needless. Americans bury or cremate about 20,000 transplantable organs every year. More than 6,000 of their neighbors die every year as a result.

Lead, not follow (2008/06/19)
Do you believe in people, not politics? Are you tired of floating boats for people rather than building bridges, and feel you have the ability to lead rather than follow?

Remembering Miss Sather (2008/06/19)
You recently printed an obituary for Miss Verlie Sather, who died May 28 at age 100. In it, you referred to the years 1948-49 when Verlie was an exchange teacher in London, England.

Impeachment hearings needed (2008/06/19)
On June 9, 35 Articles of Impeachment of President George W. Bush were introduced in the United States House of Representatives. This vitally important event has been almost completely unreported by mainline media.

Coleman not honest (2008/06/18)
On April 7, the Winona Daily News printed a letter from me regarding Norm Coleman’s hypocritical stance on property tax relief. On April 13, it printed a lame response from Tom Erickson, a guy who is apparently connected to Coleman and Coleman’s campaign.

Barack hardly counts (2008/06/18)
My great-grandfather, Georg Eisenberg, a 19th-century German Jewish immigrant and Civil War Union veteran, married Katy, an Irish lass. Their children, Emma and Harriet, were half Jewish. Emma married Louis Emile and bore Emile Jr., Armand and C. Couillard.

What’s the difference? (2008/06/18)
I think it is wonderful that the bridge is open again. There is one rule that really doesn’t make any sense to me — the restriction of cars pulling trailers.

Jail is the only benefit left (2008/06/17)
The Legislature has passed a law capping county property taxes at

Huff Street bridge is the best option (2008/06/17)
Rushford, Minn. Mr. Carlson had it right when he said to put the new bridge on Huff Street and four lanes south to U.S. Highway 61.

Where did the money go? (2008/06/17)
Over the weekend, Darrell Ehrlick, editor, on behalf of the Winona Daily News editorial board, once again claimed we Minnesotans should be willing sacrifice by paying more taxes to support our roads and bridges. He said we don’t need less government, we need a government big enough and smart enough to provide the infrastructure that we have come to expect.

Thanks for support for senior seminar (2008/06/16)
On June 2, the Winona Senior High School class of 2008 enjoyed a day of celebration and breakout sessions from local professionals who shared information on topics related to life after high school.

Heartfelt thanks for mock crash event (2008/06/16)
The sounds of sirens were everywhere, and all we could do was watch in horror as the mock crash scene unfolded. The screams pierced the air when a mother of one of the students saw her daughter’s body lifeless on the ground. At the end of this life-changing program, Capt. Kurt Lossen shared how he hopes students will think about the consequences of the choices they make when it comes to drinking and driving.

Chocolate, Shakespeare and champagne (2008/06/16)
This year’s event, held June 14, had a few new items, including the debut of a new sparkling wine thanks to Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits, cupcakes donated from Blooming Grounds, brownies from Bloedows, cheesecakes from Chartwells and chocolate-dipped strawberries from Steak Shop Catering. There was also dipped pretzels and a variety of truffles. Mugby Junction served coffee.

Leave a legacy of conservation (2008/06/15)
Leaving a legacy is a good thing; a sacred, awesome opportunity — one most of us could never dream of offering. John Latsch and many others have taken advantage of that great opportunity to do public good because of their good fortune.

If you have doubts, you are thinking (2008/06/15)
If the shots do not cause autism, then what does? It has to be something that we are doing wrong.

The community has done a great job (2008/06/15)
One week ago tonight, our phones began ringing. “Have you heard? The bridge to Winona is closed!”

Do what we do best (2008/06/14)
Fearful American politicians and unimaginative citizens still kowtow to oil, but GM, and other large firms, are forcing change.

Through the gasoline black hole (2008/06/14)
According to the New World Dictionary, the term logistics is defined as “the branch of military science having to do with procuring, maintaining and transporting of material, personnel and facilities.”

Great attitudes during tough times (2008/06/14)
Thank you to the City of Winona/Chamber of Commerce/Area Businesses for your quick action in coming up with a solution to the commuting problems many employees were facing getting to and from Winona.

Your view: Big oil may not be the bad guy (2008/06/13)
OK, now it’s time to tackle this price gouging issue.

Your view: A different light on the bridge (2008/06/13)
We, too, have been following the news items regarding the closing of our Highway 43 Interstate Bridge.

Your view: What has happened to justice system? (2008/06/13)
What has happened to this country’s so-called justice system?

Who is this guy and what’s his number? (2008/06/12)
Who is this guy and what’s his phone number? Who exactly ordered our bridge to be closed? What’s his name?

Nothing said (2008/06/12)
To those of us who were present on June 6, 1944, the anniversary of the date brings back the sorrow and horror of learning of the loss of dear friends and relatives on the beaches of Normandy.

City responded with resources, cooperation (2008/06/12)
One can’t help but feel the hostility towards city of Winona officials in the editorial piece and the article in Sunday’s Winona Post on how the city handled the bridge closing.

Identity theft and the jury system (2008/06/12)
There have been many reports in several states of identity theft scams in which individuals have posed as court staff and made phone calls to private citizens requesting private information under the guise of the jury system.

Destroying the Wilkie is inappropriate (2008/06/11)
I also agree with city councilmember Deb Salyards:

What bridge replacement means (2008/06/11)
I was in high school when the Wabasha bridge was replaced. It was a great day — we were released from school to watch it come down, and we never again feared meeting a semi-truck at the 90-degree turn as we drove over it during driver’s training. I also remember the day the new bridge was opened. That was another great day. Dignitaries from around the state came to usher in a new era in transportation, safety and economic growth for Wabasha and southeastern Minnesota.

A solution to the MnDOT problem (2008/06/11)
Take a look at this: http://europeforvisitors.com/cruises/articles/hoverspeed.htm. It is a Web site that shows the answer Minnesota Department of Transportation should use when all the bridges start closing.

The ‘yeah, whatever’ infrastructure list (2008/06/10)
Does anyone know what this area did to offend the Minnesota Department of Transportation or those who control its funding?

State the facts and sources (2008/06/10)
The safety of immunizations and vaccinations is a hot topic in our country right now and creating awareness about the different viewpoints brings Winona into a progressive and important dialogue.

A real hero changed history (2008/06/10)
An icon passed into history this week, and the residents within 50 miles of Lake City barely noticed. Bud Meyer died after a long battle with cancer.

Davis is refreshing (2008/06/08)
I attended the state Republican Convention at Rochester’s Mayo Civic Center. The proudest moment for me was when the entire assembly gave congressional candidate Brian Davis a standing ovation for stating that he doesn’t buy into the theory of human-caused global warming.

Solving the transportation problems (2008/06/08)
If the Highway 43 Interstate bridge hasn’t fallen (or even sagged) yet with full traffic, wouldn’t it seem logical that it might still support one vehicle at a time?

Shame on MnDOT (2008/06/08)
Shame on the Minnesota Department of Transportation!

Furry friends need your help (2008/06/07)
The Winona Humane Society has many cats and dogs available for adoption. This Saturday is Adoption Day (the first Saturday of every month).

Thanks for making my point (2008/06/07)
Michael Steber is long-winded by his own admission; boring, too.

Be aware of elder abuse (2008/06/07)
How would you feel if your widowed, 65-year-old mother or sister was refusing to talk to you because you didn’t like the new man in her life? What if the last time you saw her she had a large bruise that wrapped around her arm and this man called her stupid (or worse)?

Farming: A plea for sanity (2008/06/06)
It has been said, “There are times in human history when the line between genius and insanity is so fine that it is barely perceptible.”

Walk the walk, talk the talk (2008/06/06)
I recently wrote a letter in regards to the rules of student housing. It has come to my attention that when I used the term “blonde bimbos,” it was taken as sexist.

Another piece of history gone (2008/06/06)
It was sad to see the city council vote to tear down the Wilkie. Another monument to our rich history is gone. Thankfully, plans to remove the base were defeated. I was told by former city administrators that the base of the Wilkie was also part of the flood wall. I guess some of the members have forgotten about the flood of 1965.

No excuses, Winona Daily News (2008/06/03)
Where? Where in the world was the Daily News the day before Memorial Day? (Where? Out in left field?)

Put the bridge on Huff Street (2008/06/03)
About 75 years ago, the citizens of Winona were confronted with the decision to locate a new bridge over the Mississippi, replacing the old “high wagon bridge.” Certain elements within the community convinced the powers to be that the bridge should not connect to Huff Street but to Winona Street.

Frank needs to be more specific (2008/06/03)
“Many of my ilk” need Frank Schnurstein to be far more specific than to simply ask, “What has he actually done for his country besides write dissertations to the editor to impress himself and little kids” while blasting another letter-writer, Robert Hively-Johnson? Does he refer to volunteer service? Raising decent, law-abiding children? Running an honest campaign for public office? Raising money for a worthy charity?

Writers conference a success (2008/06/02)
The Young Writers’ Conference, hosted by Hiawatha Valley Education District of Winona, was held May 8 and 9 on the Winona State University campus. We thank the 23 schools in the surrounding area of Minnesota and Wisconsin who supported this conference by sending about 975 students from grades 3 through 8.

WSHS orchestra trip to NYC (2008/06/02)
In April, I had the privilege of traveling to New York City with 27 Winona Senior High School orchestra juniors and seniors, chaperones and orchestra director Cindy Johnson.

Thanks for cancer survivors event (2008/06/02)
The Cancer Survivors Day Celebration, held May 18 at the Watkins Manor, was a special recognition time for all cancer survivors, family, friends and everyone who wanted to celebrate surviving cancer.

Hike-Bike thank you (2008/06/02)
The ARC and WEA would like to thank all the organizations, businesses and participants for our 34th annual successful Hike-Bike.

Thank you American Legion (2008/06/02)
My husband and I were taught as young children to have respect for the country we live in, for the flag that flies high and to respect and honor those who have fought to give us freedom and for those who continue to fight for our wonderful country. Because of this, and the fact that we are raising our two daughters to have those same values, we have always wanted to show our respect and love for our country by having a flagpole in our yard so we can wave those colors proudly every day.

Working toward a CF cure (2008/06/02)
On May 3, Winona’s 10th annual Great Strides Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis was held at the Lake Park Lodge and East Lake bike path. This year’s walk raised close to $11,500 for research to help find a cure for CF.

Always Winhawks (2008/06/02)
A special thank you to the Winhawk Band Boosters. Whether it be down the streets of Broadway or Mainstreet USA, the Winona Winhawk Band Boosters have always been there. Last Wednesday, at our annual band picnic, we celebrated another year of great students and great parents.

Thanks, Al Gore (2008/06/01)
So, had enough of high gas prices? Sure you have, that’s like the neighbor asking you in the middle of January, “Cold enough for you?”

Wrong but amusing (2008/06/01)
In reply to Michael Steber’s lengthy comments to and about me in the May 29 issue of the Daily News: Sterber, I love it when “many of your ilk” go off half-cocked as you did.

A shoe dropped (2008/06/01)
Former White House spin-master (press secretary) Scott McClellan joined Richard Clarke, and others, in exposing the dreadful White House secret society that has so injured the nation. His tales vindicate commentary on the fascist-styled administration machinations (and timid media coverage) of another sordid conservative presidency.

Choose abstinence (2008/05/31)
The Minnesota House passed a bill mandating that public schools adopt sex education as part of the curriculum. But what does a prominent nationally known historian, David Barton, say about “academic porn” (comprehensive sex education) that’s taught to students?

Two questions (2008/05/31)
I only have two small things I’d like to ask:

Murphy just wants to take our money (2008/05/31)
The Winona Daily News (Saturday, June 24) spoke to five area legislators about what they didn’t like from this year’s session.

Words of wisdom (2008/05/31)
There is a very important passage in a play written by Heinrich Ibsen, which applies closely to our times today: “The greatest threat to our Liberty and the Truth is: Majority.”

The right to free speech (2008/05/30)
The true colors of the Daily News’ more prolific letter writers have finally been shown!

Barack Obama a welcome change (2008/05/30)
If you have a disagreement with your spouse who says, “We won’t discuss this until you admit you’re wrong,” are you satisfied?

Where were the schedules? (2008/05/30)
The editorial on Memorial Day about the significance of the day going beyond the backyard barbecue is excellent, but why didn’t it include a list of the Memorial Day programs or services that are being held today?

So long, WACS (2008/05/28)
Last night I had the pleasure of attending my son’s last spring program at the Winona Area Catholic Schools.

Winona’s windbag (2008/05/28)
I am hoping that soon, very soon, Robert Hively-Johnson’s thesaurus wears out.

John Hill benefit (2008/05/26)
Thanks to everyone who participated in the John Hill benefit. Everyone’s generosity was above and beyond. Words can not thank you enough.

Wounded Warrior ride/cruise (2008/05/26)
On May 17, more than 100 motorcycles accompanied by classic cars, sports cars, pickup trucks, hummers and a National Guard Hum-Vee, participated in the 4th annual Wounded Warrior Project Benefit Ride/Cruise.

Misato trip (2008/05/26)
I was honored to have traveled to Winona’s sister city of Misato, Japan, with the Winona Middle School and Winona Senior High School student and chaperone ambassadors. The trip is an annual event between these two communities and their schools in establishing an ongoing international friendship endeavor.

WSHS Post Prom (2008/05/26)
The Winona Senior High School Post Prom committee extends a sincere thank you to the area businesses that helped to make the event a success. We are appreciative of the support you give to our high school youths each year. Special thanks to ALLY for their donation toward two scholarships to our graduating seniors of 2008. Our committee of parents and teachers each year provide a safe environment for your children for the evening hours after the WSHS prom.

Flood ‘shower’ (2008/05/26)
Garvin Brook Disaster Relief Fund expresses thanks to all who donated items for the recent flood “shower” held for the benefit of those affected last August.

Laws of Life contributors (2008/05/26)
Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota would like to thank all of the community partners who have donated their time and money to keep the Laws of Life Essay Contest in Winona the past 12 years.

Egg roll fundraiser (2008/05/26)
The service learning class at Winona Senior High School would like to thank the community for their support in our recent fundraiser. We sold egg rolls and fried rice to our friends, family and community. Through this fundraiser, we were able to raise more than $500. The proceeds of our fundraiser are going to Heifer International, the Humane Society and Red Cross.

Car wash fundraiser (2008/05/26)
The Winona Senior High School service learning class raised more than $2,300 from our car wash on May 3 and 4. With the help of the community, teachers, family and friends who pledged the students, our class can greatly help the Red Cross Flood Relief, Heifer International, and the Winona Area Humane Society.

Lions chickencue (2008/05/26)
The Winona Noon Lions held their 11th annual chickencue May 15 at EB’s Corner. Sales were extremely brisk, causing the supply of chicken to run out much earlier than in recent years. The large crowd was attributed to the wonderful weather and the outpouring of gratitude that has been extended to the Lions for their many programs that benefit the community.

Touche (2008/05/25)
Thanks for publishing my letter on May 20. Instead of defending substance, you chose to attack my browser’s inability to make paragraphs. OK. You repeated two units of your manipulative techniques by changing my headline and by using a lead-in disclaimer of sorts. A proper response should have been “Touche!”

Celebrating Memorial Day (2008/05/25)
I have always remembered Memorial Day. I wasn’t able to make it to the band shell this year, but oh well.

Thanks, but no thanks, Pelosi (2008/05/25)
Amazing just how fast the “party of change” has gotten the price of oil up 55 bucks a barrel and gas up a $1.75 a gallon just in a short period of less than two years after running on the promise of lowering oil.

Your view: Change for change (2008/05/24)
Last week, an e-mail arrived asking for my stimulus check. The suggestion was that I invest my check in peace or, to be more accurate, send all or part of it to a peace group.

Your view: Design flaw or apathy? (2008/05/24)
Why haven’t the railroad crossing medians, newly constructed last year, been painted for visibility?

Your view: Know the facts about mercury (2008/05/24)
Although I am not a resident of the region your publication serves, I have become aware of the aforementioned letter through the Web site Respectful Insolence: http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2008/05/what_is_it_about_winona_mn_and_antivacci.php

Your view: Jackboots and spin (2008/05/23)
Contrary to recent statements, editor Darrell Ehrlick does not alter submitted letters, save to fit the page and (mercifully) clean up bad writing and typos. If some letters fail to make it, perhaps those writers should review their output.

Your view: Proud to protect the blufflands (2008/05/23)
I was interested in responding to Mark Sommerhauser’s recent article about blufflands.

Your view: Milking a cash cow (2008/05/23)
I am writing to express my disappointment with a Western Wisconsin community services agency.

Winona has egg on its face (2008/05/22)
Winona has egg on its face. It is being ridiculed on a widely read, highly respected science blog on the Internet because you published three anti-vaccine letters full of falsehoods and distortions. See:

Respect for McCain gone (2008/05/22)
It doesn’t matter if Hillary or Barack win the nomination because there is a wide difference between them and McCain.

Protect and serve? (2008/05/22)
In the May 8 edition of the Pioneer Press, there was an AP story on the beating of three suspects by Philadelphia policemen. Six were involved, in some manner, in the incident.

Censorship on these pages (2008/05/20)
Editor’s note: The following letter is being run as it was submitted to the Winona Daily News. No spelling was corrected and only the most minimal formatting was used. The Daily News routinely edits letters for spelling, grammar and formatting. It also runs letters in a first-come, first-served basis. The Daily News reserves the right to decline publishing letters that are libelous or otherwise do not meet our editorial guidelines, which are regularly published in full.

Winona: A capital for all (2008/05/20)
The people of Winona should be proud of their entire Capital for a Day celebration, because, unlike other Capital for a Day celebrations around the state, including St. Paul’s, Winona’s celebration was inclusive and appreciated by all people, including the native people that originally lived in this area.

Applewood Pointe (2008/05/15)
I heartily endorse the idea of having the senior co-op Applewood Pointe being built in Winona.

Wing nuts (2008/05/15)
I have noticed recent letters asking your paper to limit letters to the editor from certain frequent contributors.

Drawdown will benefit the river (2008/05/14)
The summer drawdown of Pool 6 (Winona to Trempealeau) has been discussed for several years by the Water Level Management Task Force, which is made up of government agencies responsible for managing the resources of the Upper Mississippi River. These water level reductions have been used on several other pools of the Upper Mississippi and have resulted in significant improvements in the quality of the fish and wildlife habitat within the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge.

Let them write (2008/05/14)
I disagree with the proposal to limit letters to the editor.

Jim Miller got it right (2008/05/14)
I am sure Jim R. Miller will not mind if I add to his April 17 Winona Daily News comments, “Manufacturing loss hurts our defense.”

Your view: Let the writers write (2008/05/13)
I disagree with both Mr. Rybarczyk and Mr. Krings on the frequency that letters can be submitted.

Your view: Letters should be free for all (2008/05/13)
In response to the opinion submitted by Bruce Krings, “There ought to be a limit.”

Your view: Thank you for your SmartTown support (2008/05/13)
The more I learn about the SmartTown Program, the more appreciative I am that exists here in the Winona area.

I support clean cars, clean legislative process (2008/05/09)
There has been some confusion about my position on the “Clean Cars” bill moving through the legislative process. The bill calls on automakers to provide us with less polluting, more fuel-efficient cars and trucks. I support the bill because it will save consumers money on fuel, decrease our dependence on foreign oil and decrease greenhouse gas emissions in Minnesota.

I’ll be listening (2008/05/09)
I would like to thank the Republican delegates of House District 28B for honoring me with their endorsement and responsibility of representing Wabasha, Winona and Goodhue counties in St. Paul.

To a great teacher (2008/05/09)
Thank you, thank you to a most tremendous person, Tory-Kale Schulz, a fifth-grade teacher at St. Stan’s Middle School.

There ought to be a limit (2008/05/09)
I agree with John Rybarczyk’s letter. It’s time to put a limit on the frequency with which writers can submit letters. Once a quarter should be enough for anyone. Why do some people feel the need to abuse the privilege? Like John said, enough is enough already!

Act now to protect our bluffs (2008/05/08)
Our bluffs are part of what makes Winona County such a wonderful place. They are dear to us and a huge asset to our county.

Franken shows leadership (2008/05/08)
I’d like to commend Al Franken for the serious and responsible way he handled a very tough situation this past week. First, the facts:

Pelowski should vote for clean cars (2008/05/08)
I am writing to express my surprise and chagrin regarding Rep. Gene Pelowski’s vote against the proposed clean cars legislation. Pelowski certainly must know that the clean cars bill is intended to require auto makers to produce more fuel efficient cars and trucks.

Clean cars bill will help us all (2008/05/08)
As gas prices continue to increase, it’s nice to know that some of our elected officials are taking steps to free our economy from the grips of a dwindling resource.

More coherent thoughts (2008/05/08)
Both Robert Hively-Johnson’s and Jim R. Miller’s letters to the editor on May 6 should stand as examples why submissions to the Winona Daily News should be limited to a more reasonable amount of time, lets say three months or so. That way, one could take the time to develop a more coherent thought process and not respond to an apparent insatiable urge to see one’s name in print every five to seven days.

Bush is no Truman (2008/05/06)
“Who controls the past, controls the future: Who controls the present controls the past.” — George Orwell

Bush to blame for high gas prices (2008/05/06)
Someone asked me what I thought about high price of gas the other day. Well, actually I think it’s pretty simple.

Why are politicians paid to campaign? (2008/05/05)
I wonder what would happen if I went up to my boss and said, “I want to take a year or so off to look for a better job, but I want to stay on the payroll while I’m looking?”

Officer treated worse than thief (2008/05/05)
This is in response to the front page story about a police officer that was “convicted” of assault.

$100,000 for legal fees is ridiculous (2008/05/04)
I am concerned about the recent revelation that the District 861 school board has spent $100,000 on legal fees.

Prom activities a huge success (2008/05/04)
With a sense of pride in our community and deep gratitude, I read in the Winona Daily News that “no extra police patrols were needed on prom night in Winona.”

Time to tax criminal religions (2008/05/04)
New York Catholic Cardinal Edward Egan recently criticized Rudy Giuliani for taking communion. Like others, Egan overstepped his authority and used the pulpit immorally and illegally to threaten or sanction those who vote or profess secular laws and politics they oppose.

Are poor, vulnerable of no worth? (2008/05/03)
Republican presidential candidate John McCain seems to have this belief that the poor, vulnerable and marginalized are of no worthwhile interest to the average person.

OFP used to start divorce proceedings (2008/05/03)
The order for protection needs to be looked at and changed.

Red Cross needs volunteers (2008/05/03)
It is National Volunteer Week — a time to recognize volunteers and celebrate the spirit of volunteerism.

More MADDness (2008/05/01)
While driving east on Third Street, yes, ’twas Third, a westbound driver caught my eye.

Poppy season for American Legion (2008/05/01)
It’s poppy season again at the American Legion Auxiliary, and some post members will be out asking for donations for our yearly poppy drive.

See a movie before recommending it (2008/05/01)
I recently read a column under the “Connections” section of the paper on April 27, “It’s time for some chick shtick,” by Kari Knutson.

Volunteers deserve recognition (2008/04/30)
April 28 through May 3 is designated as Volunteer Recognition Week nationally as well as throughout our area.

Don’t adopt California law here (2008/04/30)
I read about a proposal to require air pollution requirements on autos in Minnesota.

Clannin just not right about Walz (2008/04/29)
In a recent letter criticizing Rep. Tim Walz’s support of the Employee Free Choice Act, Tom Clanin tries to smear the congressman by saying “Freedom shouldn’t be for sale.”

Preventing 18 deaths a day (2008/04/29)
War is killing us, abroad and at home. This stark reality finally warranted front page coverage in Winona in your April 21 edition.

The real costs of war (2008/04/29)
One very significant high cost of the Iraq War that Stiglitz and Bilmes do not include in their “The Three Million Dollar War” is the very real cost of the quality of life impairment of wounded veterans.
