Two men were jumped, beaten and robbed early Tuesday outside an East End bar, police said.
The men told officers as many as three people participated in the assault outside the Handy Corner, 700 E. Fifth St., said Deputy Police Chief Tom Williams. Investigators say they are close to bringing charges in the robbery.
Officers responded at 1:22 a.m. Tuesday to the bar on a robbery call. A 38-year-old man from Trempealeau, Wis., said he and his his brother, a 33-year-old man from Winona, were waiting for a cab outside the bar when he was attacked from behind, Williams said. The man couldn't remember anything after the initial attack.
No weapons were used, but police suspect up to three people punched and kicked the men and and stole one of their wallets, which contained about $300. One of the men suffered injuries to his face, though both declined medical assistance, Williams said.
