Through June of this year, the state spent $7.7 million on gas to keep the state fleet running, compared with $5.9 percent during the same time last year, said Jim Langdon of the Department of Administration.
Langdon said state agencies are trying to reduce fuel consumption by avoiding unnecessary trips, but so far there has been no measurable cutback in driving.
The state paid an average of $2.88 per gallon of gas last year. That average has risen to $3.69 this year.
