Erickson shot a 4-over-par 76, one stroke better than Beyerstedt, to take the overall lead going into the last two days.
“I have been playing my best golf all week,” Erickson said. “Today, I was hitting the ball really good but I wasn’t hitting any putts. This was my home course, I was expecting to do pretty good.
“My goal coming in was to play solid golf, something like fifth place. I guess I’m doing better than that. If I keep playing the golf that I’m playing, there is a pretty good chance I can win.”
Erickson may have the lead, but the round of the day belonged to Justin Ewert.
Ewert fired an even-par 72, four strokes better than Erickson.
Coming into the day, Ewert was eight shots behind and after Wednesday, he is only four shots back.
The last time someone recorded a score of even par or better at the
Around the County tournament was 2004.
“I was hitting my driver terrible but I was able to get up-and-down from everywhere,” Ewert said. “I made some pretty good putts. It was a good round.
“I was down eight to Beyerstedt and Erickson, so I knew I had to shoot low,” he said. “I hope to go out tomorrow and shoot another low score.”
William Leaf tied for second on the day, shooting 76 and is two shots back of Erickson.
Defending champion Jason Edstrom shot 78, Brett Egland shot 79, Aaron Theis shot 80 and Brian Russell shot 81.
Today will be a big challenge for the 19 golfers as they will have to play all 27 holes at Cedar Valley Golf Course. Friday, the tournament will conclude at the Bridges Golf Club.
“I think I’ll make a run at it tomorrow,” Ewert said. “Hopefully I can get even with the leader and make a run at it Friday.”
