Wisconsin communities are paying more to have waste hauled away.
Dorinda Floyd of the Milwaukee Public Works Department said the city probably will pay $2 million more for diesel fuel and gas this year than it had budgeted.
Milwaukee handles its own garbage collection, while many smaller communities hire contractors.
Charlotte Brunner of the Waukesha Department of Public Works said the city paid its contractor an extra $34,000 in the first half of the year because diesel prices topped $2.85 a gallon.
Garbage collection in Grafton will cost 62.5 percent more next year, and their new five-year contract will reduce some services, officials said.
Garbage companies said higher diesel prices and landfill fees are responsible for the price increases.
