Doug Scholz-Carlson, GRSF associate director and veteran actor, and James Armstrong, Winona’s poet laureate, hosted the event while GRSF acting and apprentice acting company members read the winning sonnets and several others. Each of the City-Wide Sonnet Contest winners received prizes, including books of poetry, wine from the Garvin Heights Winery, and laurel wreaths provided by Nola’s Flowers.
Nathaniel Barrett submitted 11 sonnets, including “The Light Will Never Shine” and “After Life,” which secured the title of 2008 City-Wide Sonnet Contest Best Overall.
Fran Edstrom, editor of the Winona Post, won Best Sonnet About Love for her sonnet entitled “Blue Hour.”
Kathy Peterson’s “Sonnet #1” was awarded Best Humorous Sonnet.
Best Sonnet about a Modern Topic went to Ken McCullough for “No Honeymoon.”
The youngest poet to enter the contest, Orion McCullough-Smith, won the title of Best Sonnet by a Young Writer for “Code Orange.”
Emilio De Grazia won the title of Best Traditional Sonnet for “Sonnet #2.“
Scholz-Carlson and Armstrong led workshops throughout the GRSF 2008 season designed to introduce aspiring sonneteers to the basic form of a sonnet and to assist community members with their sonnet-writing endeavors. More than 56 sonnets were submitted for the contest.
