It’s formally called the R.W. Lindholm Service Station, but most people know it as the only gas station designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
The station opened up 50 years ago this summer, and has been a working service station ever since.
The station is owned by the Best Oil Company of Cloquet. Co-owner Mike McKinney says they company couldn’t afford the $400,000 it would take to fully restore the station.
However, the $150,000 was enough for workers to have scraped and completely repainted the station’s exterior and interior, cleaned and repaired the upstairs lounge, and installed new gas pumps.
A series of special events and a symposium exploring Wright’s life, his work in Cloquet, and popular culture in the 1950s is set for Thursday in Cloquet.
