With my baby, Lilith, entering kindergarten in August, and my oldest daughter, Cecilia, entering second grade, I know that I will have my hands full this fall.
Both are already registered for Girl Scout troops, and I will again be co-leading a Brownie troop.
My baby has also expressed interest in taking martial arts (as she runs around the house doing karate chops and attempts to sing “Kung Fu Fighting”).
It’s a challenge to work a full-time job, keep a house going and run kids here and there. However, I wouldn’t trade it for anything in this world.
I’m not one to sit still. I do like to be busy, and this coming school year (and many, many following) I will be.
For example, I remember being very pregnant with my first daughter, and I was watching my husband work in the backyard. I sat down in our hammock for a short spell, but when I tried to get up after a few minutes, I couldn’t (the whole center-of-gravity pregnancy thing). My husband made me stay in the hammock for a while before he would help me out. I am not good at just relaxing.
Life is too short to sit still.
Before you know it, Tony and I will be taking the girls shopping for school supplies, clothes and haircuts. The ritual of waking sleepyheads, packing lunches and helping with homework soon will begin. School fundraisers and night functions are right around the corner.
Girl Scout cookie sales in Wisconsin begin in late September. Let me know if you Minnesotans need some Thin Mints or Samoas. I can hook you up.
Isn’t it all terribly exciting? Busy, busy, busy! No sarcasm intended.
I look forward to paging through the Scholastic book orders that come home monthly. School parties, carnivals, conferences and reports are all coming up.
Cecilia is not as thrilled about returning to school as I am. She’s still enjoying her summer. She’s been swimming, finding critters, riding her bike and playing Bakugans with her friends. It’s good that she has a solid month before returning to school, I guess. She’s busy being a kid. Lily is anxious to go to school though. She’s a “big girl” don’t you know. It ought to be fun to see how she adapts to the classroom. She’s a smart one, but she also giggles a lot (it may be borderline disruptive — my apologies in advance to her teacher).
Yes, yes. I am looking forward to the changes this autumn brings. A little chaos can be a good thing. It keeps us lively, spirited.
Besides, sanity is overrated anyway.
Sherry Nelson is joyfully married and mother of two little girls. When it comes to spewing political views, the former DFLer claims to be a victim of Stockholm syndrome, and her husband Tony is just fine with that. Of course, Sherry is able to bite her tongue from time to time.
