We are excited by Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s recent appointment of assistant county attorney Nancy Bostrack as Winona County District Court judge.
We believe she’s a great selection. We’ve known that from the compassionate and good work she’s done while serving Winona County residents in the attorney’s office. She’ll now continue that legacy, just in a different manner.
This is also doubly special news because of the extreme situation Minnesota courts find themselves. The courts in Minnesota absorbed huge hits — bigger than what should have been. This has meant a slowdown at best, a serious delay in justice at its worse. But with Bostrack being named to the bench, it gives some good news to an already overworked system in southern Minnesota.
We welcome Bostrack in her new role, and we look forward to seeing her give the judiciary something additional of which to be proud. The county attorney’s loss is still the entire court system’s gain.
Her appointment also reconfirms that despite the slow pace of the courts, we still have really good people in the system — judges who care about those who cross the threshold of a courtroom door.
Bostrack has done wonderful things when it comes to families, protecting victims and also seeking resolutions that were fair yet compassionate.
We’re sure the other two candidates were very worthy of consideration, and that, in Pawlenty’s words, he couldn’t have goofed up. Yet, we appreciate that someone the community feels so familiar with will now don the black robe.
We believe the years she’s spent in Winona County courtrooms will serve her well. She has an understanding of the people and the issues facing the area.
The language of the courts and its otherwise dignified, solemn atmosphere there doesn’t usually allow for any outbursts. In this case, though, we say: Woo-hoo!
Sometimes, the actions of the court tend to fade into the background of our lives. That sometimes retards our reaction to things
like judge appointments. But we should also remember that we live in a country where the proceedings of judges and the law happens out in the open. Moreover, that good folks we know serve in important roles of public trust, like a district court judge.
Congratulations, your honor. It’s been a honor to have you serve Winona County — and we look forward to more successful years on the bench.
