The three-day kickoff to the summer season is always filled with family gatherings, cookouts and picnics, graduation parties, camping and boating and other fun in our beautiful region.
We hope today is enjoyable, too.
But, we hope you pause to remember the reason behind this day of celebration.
It’s more than just charcoal and, with luck, sunscreen.
It is a day to remember the heroes who have helped make our lives free to enjoy the things we love.
Today is Memorial Day, filled with touching parades and ceremonies throughout the 7 Rivers Region.
Memorial Day goes back 140 years, to post-Civil War times, when Gen. John A. Logan ordered flowers placed on the graves of soldiers — both Union and Confederate — at Arlington National Cemetery outside our nation’s capital.
Memorial Day is a day to come together and remember the sacrifice that Americans have made for democracy.
It is a good day to remember what freedom means. Of course, we shouldn’t need a holiday to remember that.
After a long, cold winter, the residents of our region deserve a warm, sunny day for family get-togethers and outdoor fun.
But, please remember that Memorial Day isn’t just a random day off. It has deeper meaning and deserves deeper respect.
As you hear the salute of Taps or hear the roll call of those who served your community, and as you acknowledge the solemn sacrifice, please give thanks to those who have served — and those who are still serving.
It is a day to remember more than just the bug spray.
