That meant good news for the Lewiston-Altura High School softball team as the Cardinals got four early runs and defeated No. 5 seed Hope Lutheran 4-0 on Thursday in the Sub-Section 1A East quarterfinals.
The No. 4 seed Cardinals got to Hope Lutheran starter Felicia Meyer early. The Cardinals got out to a
3-0 lead in the first inning after a Brittany Rodgers two-run double. The first four hitters in the inning reached base.
In the bottom of the second, Emily Kronebusch led off with a double and scored later on an error. Kronebusch went 3-for-3 in the game.
“I’m really glad we came out and got those runs early,” L-A coach Colin Williams said. “They have a really good young pitcher. We needed those runs right away and we were able to hold them off.”
Peterson went the full seven innings, allowed three hits, walked two and struck out 14, including six consecutive at one point.
“I was pretty pumped. I was excited for the game,” Peterson said. “I’ve got a good defense behind me and they were very solid.”
The Patriots had their chances to get to Peterson. In the top of the fourth, Angie Wenzel doubled and Jamie O’Laughlin followed with a walk.
Christine Klug followed with a single up the middle and Wenzel looked like she was going to score from second, but was called out for running out of the baseline.
In the fifth, Hope Lutheran got runners on second and third with two outs, but Peterson got Megan Luehmann to groundout to the shortstop to end the inning.
“We got off to a real rough start, that’s what put us in the hole,” Patriots coach Kevin Meyer said. “We had a lot of scoring opportunities and we just couldn’t make a play and we had a real questionable call.”
Meyer went six innings, allowed six hits, three walks and struck out 10 for Hope Lutheran.
“She threw all right tonight,” Coach Meyer said. “She couldn’t throw her change for strikes and they were just sitting on her fastball.”
L-A plays Saturday at noon and Hope Lutheran plays Saturday at 10 a.m. in the losers bracket.
