Area roundup: R-P surprises Hurricanes

HOUSTON, Minn. — Heather Vix got herself into position and Steph Baker provided the game-winning heroics for the Rushford-Peterson High School softball team.

The sixth-seeded Trojans upset No. 3-seed Houston 5-4 Thursday in the first round of the Sub-Section 1A East tournament with a four-run seventh inning to push it to extra innings before the Vix-Baker game-winner in the eighth inning.
R-P will play No. 2 Wabasha-Kellogg at noon Saturday in Peterson, Minn., while Houston will play No. 7 Goodhue at 10 a.m. in Peterson.

Houston’s Calli Schneider struck out 13 and took a no-hitter into the seventh before R-P charged back and Houston broke down.

Two costly errors gave R-P four runs in the seventh. The runs actually gave the Trojans the lead 4-3, but Houston’s Emily Ernest reached on a bunt single and Amber Wieser nailed a two-out RBI double to tie things in the bottom of the seventh.

Kayla Rislov struck out nine and walked one in eight innings of work for the win.

(2) W-K 8, (7) Goodhue 3

WABASHA, Minn. — Christina Reister was 3-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases and three RBIs in leading Wabasha-Kellogg.

Teammate Christal Balow was 1-for-2 with three RBIs, including the go-ahead, two-run single in the third inning.

Whitney Madison got the win, striking out four and walking none in four innings. Teammate Ava Perry got the save, striking out eight and walking none in the final three innings.

Sub-Section 1AA tourney

(1) St. Charles 12, (8) P-E-M 3


ST. CHARLES, Minn. — Emily Nelson was 2-for-5 with a three-run home run in leading top-seeded and undefeated St. Charles into the second round.

The Saints will host La Crescent at 11 a.m. Saturday. Plainview-Elgin-Millville, which got two RBIs from Nicole Haley, will play Lake City in the loser’s bracket at 9 a.m. in St. Charles.

Erin Abbott got the win for the Saints, going five innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. She was also 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored. Teammate Katie Dunlay was 2-for-3 with a double.

(5) La Crescent 7, (4) Lake City 2

LAKE CITY, Minn. — Junior shortstop Lydia Allen went 3-for-3 with a double and a home run for La Crescent, which lost twice to Lake City during the regular season.

Michelle Lassig had three hits and three RBI for the Lancers.

(2) SG/C 4, (7) D-E 0

SPRING GROVE, Minn. — Cassie Gran pitched a complete-game, one-hitter to lead Spring Grove/Caledonia past Dover-Eyota.

Gran struck out eight and held D-E without a hit after a second-inning single.

SG/C’s Aly Meyer went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jenna Schmitz went 2-for-3.

Division 3

(5) O-F 4, (4) Whitehall 1


WHITEHALL, Wis. — Whitehall’s Stacey Johnson scattered seven hits, struck out six and walked one, but only got one run and two hits in support in the loss to Osseo-Fairchild.

Courtney Kloes and Kayla Sygulla each had a hit for the Norse.

Division 2

(3) G-E-T 5, (6) West Salem 4

GALESVILLE, Wis. — The game was one strike away from going to extra innings when Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau’s Nicole Walski hit a fly ball that was played into a fielding error and a throwing error, allowing Walski to round the bases with the winning run.

G-E-T will play at Black River Falls on Tuesday.

Division 4

(4) I/G 7, (5) B-T 0


INDEPENDENCE, Wis. — Cassandra Schmitt struck out 12 and walked two in the two-hit victory for Independence/ Gilmanton over Blair-Taylor. Schmitt was also 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Bayli Maliszewski was 2-for-3 with a pair of triples and two RBIs for I/G, which will play at No. 1 seeded Cochrane-Fountain City on Tuesday.

Nonconference

Luther 8, De Soto 3


ONALASKA, Wis. — Rachel Niemi set Onalaska Luther’s all-time hits record with 89 in this nonconference warmup for the WIAA tournament for the two teams with first-round byes.

The old record of 88 was set by Rachel’s sister, Carol, in 2006.

Amy Dobrunz and Krista Hoeg were both 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Luther, while teammate Brianna Ekhoff went 3-for-4.

Baseball

Three Rivers

W-K 10, Kingsland 0


WABASHA, Minn. — Jordan Dick pitched five innings of one-hit ball, striking out five and walking one in leading Wabasha-Kellogg.

Kyler Stiner had a double and two RBIs, Kyle Sill was 3-for-3 with a double and Holden Hartert was 2-for-2 with a double for W-K, which was up 8-0 after the second inning.

Southland 19, St. Charles 6

ST. CHARLES, Minn. — Three Rivers Conference leader Southland battered the Saints for 14 hits and scored in every inning except the third.

The Saints scored all six runs in the bottom of the first to take a 6-1 lead, but we’re held scoreless the rest of the way by Southland’s Cody Retterath, who pitched a complete game and struck out eight for the win.

Matt Ellinghuysen went 3-for-4 and Brent Kraut and Jake Braun had two hits apiece for St. Charles.

Chatfield 13, P-E-M 11

PLAINVIEW, Minn. — Bryan Neis was 5-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs for Chatfield, which held off a five-run, seventh-inning rally by Plainview-Elgin-Millville.

Matthan Kohn went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs for the Bulldogs, while teammate Ben Keilholtz was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

R-P 8, L-A 2

LEWISTON, Minn. — Rushford-Peterson scored all its runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings combined to race past Lewiston-Altura.

R-P’s Blake Lea pitched a complete game and struck out 11 for the win. Lea held L-A to five hits and one walk.

Cody Fricke and Blake Erickson each had three hits for R-P.

Aaron Phillips went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for L-A.

Fillmore Central 13, L-A 7

LEWISTON, Minn. — Fillmore Central scored at least one run every inning but the second and put up 12 hits against Lewiston-Altura.

David Berg hit a sixth inning grand slam for Fillmore Central. Dalton Woellert, Tim Melver and Levi Olstad had two hits apiece for the Falcons.

Brandon Haag and Cyril Pyfferoen each went 2-for-4 for L-A. Haag had an RBI.

Schaeffer Academy 4,

Hope Lutheran 2

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Schaeffer Academy erased a 2-1 deficit with three runs, including a two-run error, in the bottom of the fifth and eliminated Hope Lutheran in a play-in game.

Hope Lutheran’s Ted Schwerzler took the loss despite working a complete game with 12 strikeouts and went

2-for-4.

Eric Foley went 3-for-3 with two runs and three stolen bases for Schaeffer Academy.
